Context

ENAR, as an umbrella organisation, has the opportunity to connect with different organisations among its network. This provides a wide range of perspectives and lived experiences that provide the organisation to have a 360-degree vision on discrimination patterns. ENAR has been championing for already 26 years the fight against racism and other discrimination patterns and remains open to provide valuable insights in other ecosystems in which inequities still persist.

The areas of climate and economic policies are particular issue areas where reports of racism, injustice and discrimination have started to be documented. In Europe, racialised minorities are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis that is a result of the economic system that relies on the exploitation of people and their land for the wealth of a few, while being denied access to essential services. In addition, there is an increased interest in the unique perspective of racialised minorities in their experiences of the climate crisis and their solution for an economic system that works for all and centres the well-being of people and the planet.

Purpose of the Working Group

The Climate Justice Working Group aims to provide support to the ENAR members who are interested in working in racial discrimination in the climate crisis and the economy. The idea is to meet four times a year to discuss how we can create spaces in which our work on combatting racism in European climate and economic policies, contribute to racial mainstreaming in climate action, and enhance data available on the experiences of climate disruption.

We would like to discuss with you:

  • What are the instruments that ENAR has to empower our members on this topic?
  • How do we understand issues surrounding climate and economic justice in Europe, how are they interconnected, and are there organizations or individuals you recommend we reach out to for potential collaboration or support?
  • What are the urgent issues which we need to be focusing on?
  • What expertise or experiences do you bring to the group, particularly related to climate and economic justice?
  • Who do we need to connect with to make our members more engaged in the ecosystem?
  • What are the things we can learn from this journey together?

First Meeting: 28 February 2024, 14:00-15:30 (CET)

Location: Online (link will be shared after the confirmation of representatives)

The working group will be meeting regularly every quarter, online. In 2024, we plan to have a physical meeting and other supporting activities surrounding the topic. Physical meeting for 2024 will most probably take place in September 2024, to be confirmed.

The working group will consist of 15 member organisations at most. The selection process based on knowledge, expertise and experience on the topic will be conducted after the deadline has passed. While the organisations have the flexibility to change their representatives within the working group, it is important to higlight that those organisations signing up commit to actively participating in meetings for a full year.

For organisations that have never been part of the Climate and Economic Justice Working Group, a mandatory info session will be held on 26 February, 14:00-15:00 (CET). If your organisation is already participating in the Climate and Economic Justice Working Group, registration is not required.
